OKeeffes Bakery

O'Keeffe’s Artisan Bakery are currently celebrating their 40th Anniversary and as part of their celebrations, O’Keeffe’s set upon a project to reduce their energy usage in the bakery.

Coolair were requested by O’Keeffe’s to work with them to design and install the Roof mounted Solar Photovoltaic System on the low profile sloping south and North roofs.

Client Challenge

The main objectives for the PV system with its clean renewable generated electricity was to:

  • Reduce reliance on daytime ESB supplied power throughout the year by circa 350,000,00kwhrs annually on the understanding that all PV generated kw hrs are consumed in the Bakery.
  • This gives an equivalent annual Co2 saving of 122,500.00 kgs (102.5 Metric Tonnes) using 2023 Co2 multiplier for Ireland.
  • This is also an equivalent of 4115 trees being planted annually.

Our Solution

Equipment

  • Coolair selected Schweizer (formerly Hilti Solar) MSP TT High Quality fixing components for the existing on site trapezoidal roofs to give maximum yields per annum using available space.
  • The Schweizer system is an aluminium kit form with low weight and certified longevity.
  • We used Amerisolar Solar Photovoltaic modules with a quantity of 739 x 575watt modules.
  • Amerisolar are a well-established manufacturer and Coolair has had a long relationship with Amerisolar and have imported and installed nearly 14MW of Solar PV modules to date.

Solution

  • To complement the Amerisolar PV modules; we installed a SolarEdge 3-phase inverters on the roof adjacent to the PV system. These SolarEdge inverters are suitable for external use.
  • Solaredge are one of the world’s leading Solar PV inverters.
  • Coolair have had a relationship with SolarEdge for approximately 10 years.
  • SolarEdge’s unique main attributes are fire safety with their unique Safe DC technology.
  • Leading global insurance companies such as Zurich/Allianz/AON and Global FM are insisting on SolarEdge Safe DC technology to achieve compliance with their revised stringent fire safety regulations.
  • The PV system and its performance can be monitored remotely by the Bakery’s Management.

Outcome

To support O’Keeffe’s Artisan Bakery’s 40th anniversary sustainability goals, Coolair delivered a roof-mounted Solar PV system that significantly reduces energy demand, lowers carbon emissions, and improves long-term operational control. The system is designed to maximise on-site generation and consumption, delivering measurable environmental and commercial benefits from day one.

The completed installation reduces reliance on daytime ESB-supplied power by approximately 350,000 kWh per year, with all generated electricity consumed directly within the bakery. This results in an annual CO₂ saving of 122.5 tonnes, based on Ireland’s 2023 emissions factors — the equivalent of planting over 4,100 trees each year. The system combines high-efficiency PV modules, lightweight long-life mounting solutions and industry-leading SolarEdge inverter technology, delivering enhanced fire safety, insurer compliance and remote performance monitoring for the bakery management team.
